By Woods team

Down here in Kerala, Wayanad is one of the most pristine and serene destinations to unwind and enjoy that much needed escape into the mountains. Wayanad is abundant with rich varieties of exotic flora and fauna, breathtaking scenic beauty, climbing and trekking trails. A trip to Wayanad is incomplete without soaking in its terrain on foot. Plan your next trekking trip to Wayanad to immerse in the local sights and sounds of the place.

Here are a few essential tips for a successful mountain trip you need to keep in mind:

The right clothing

Wearing the right weather and terrain appropriate clothing plays a huge role in having a safe and comfortable mountain trip. Wayanad weather is pleasant throughout the year, getting considerably cooler in the winter months. Wear a sturdy pair of shoes, thick socks, fleece and a waterproof lightweight jacket to protect yourself against leeches, cold winds and rain. Also carry sunglasses and a cap or hat to keep the Sun and its UV rays away.

Check the weather

Even though the weather atop the mountains would be generally cool, you can never know for sure. The weather can take an unexpected turn anytime. Make sure you check the weather forecast before you embark on your mountain trip. If there are chances of rain, it is better to postpone your trip to another date so as to protect yourself against flash floods or landslides.

Hydrate yourself

Carry sufficient water as hiking can be a strenuous activity. There may not be enough sources of clean drinking water to be found in the mountains. Ensure you are sufficiently hydrated before starting your mountain trip as well as during the trip. The cool brook may look enticing but it may be chocklit of bacteria. It is advisable to carry iodine tablets or portable water filters if you need to drink mountain water.

Acclimatize gradually

It is very important to acclimatize to the mountain terrain and weather conditions slowly. The time to acclimatize may differ from person to person but on a general basis it is advisable to:

  • Begin your ascent from below 10000 feet and then hike up the mountain at a slow pace to adjust to the high altitude.
  • On climbing every 3000 feet, spend at least two nights at the same elevation.
  • Carb load more than usual during your mountain travel
  • Avoid consumption of alcohol while climbing the mountain.

Adjust to the Air Pressure

Air pressure varies as you climb up a mountain. This is one of the main tips for a successful mountain trip. Go slow and steady to gradually adjust to the varying air pressure. A sudden change in altitude may cause headache, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, sleep disturbances, nausea, fatigue, dizziness. If any of these symptoms worsen, start your descent immediately.

Emergency Kit

Have an emergency kit handy, consisting of first aid, compass, whistle, map, rope, tent, iodine tablets, basic tools, space blanket, etc.

So there you have it, some tips for a successful mountain trip, which you can follow. So enjoy your trip to the mountains and try to follow these above tips too.
